Join us in the Bugaboos for some skills building and your chance to summit some of these world class peaks! Seriously, this place is awesome! Imagine yourself on the summit of a fang like granite spire that literally juts through the glaciers below and pushes it’s way up into the sky. Pretty cool right! Famous spires like, Bugaboo, Snowpatch, and the Howsers have had climbers from all around the world in awe of their rugged beauty and striking lines. Standing on these beasts is truly a lifetime experience that you would not likely forget. It’s a spectacular feeling!
The Bugaboo mountains are within the apply named, Bugaboo Provincial Park which is located in the Purcell Mountain range of British Columbia, roughly between Golden and Radium Hot Springs. To get there you take a pretty good 50 km gravel logging road from Brisco, BC to the trailhead. Once at the trailhead, there is a beautiful trail that flows through the landscape with constant views of the mountains and their glaciers. You might even get lucky and catch the mountain flowers in full bloom: strong colours like purple from the strikingly beautiful Chamaenerion Angustifolium. (a.k.a. mountain fireweed). The trail is far from a flat walk in the park, as it is moderately steep and usually takes 3-4 hours to the ACC’s Conrad Kain hut, which is well worth the effort. From the hut we are well positioned to take in the grandeur of the surrounding peaks and plan the following day’s objectives.
On our courses we typically stay in the comforts of the Conrad Kain hut which, can be busy at times, but provides us with shared sleeping quarters, a fully equipped kitchen, and of course a roof over our heads. All of the amenities of the hut allow us to pack lighter and save energy for the climbs ahead; not to mention the comforts that come with staying in a hut if the weather craps out. While at the hut you will most definitely read a little or a lot about the famous Austrian Mountain Guide, Conrad Kain, whom the hut is named after. His legacy of mountain climbing is still strong with many climbers today. His first ascent of Bugaboo Spire in 1916 when he overcame the famous Bugaboo gendarme still boggles climber’s minds as to how he accomplished such a feat that still stumps climber to this day.
After reaching the hut and getting settled in, the following days will plan to build on a few mountaineering skills like glacier travel and crevasse rescue before getting after the main mountain climbing objectives. One of the best things that this program has going for it is the built in flexibility to cater directly to our your personal skills and expectations. With lower 2:1 ratios (max) we can focus more time to learn new skills, or going on glacier tours, or climbing the surrounding peaks. If this is your first time on a glacier, not a problem. If you don’t have a lot of climbing experience, not a problem. If all you really want to do is get after it and climb, not a problem. The flexibility of this program is great for almost everyone with a decent level of fitness and who is looking to make memories, have fun, and challenge themselves a little! So, what are you waiting for… Sounds amazing right!… Get a hold of us today and get signed up for some Bugaboo amazement!
